Nicole Hammond, PhD Candidate

​Nicole is a Research Assistant with the Childhood Adversity and Resilience (CARe) Research Team, and a PhD Candidate in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health, at the University of Ottawa. Nicole’s doctoral research focuses on everyday family dynamics of parenting practices and family functioning or dysfunction, and how they prospectively relate to later adolescent onset self-harm and suicidality (suicidal ideation and attempt). Nicole is a recognized Emerging Scholar (2024) with the Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN) program, and her doctoral research was funded through a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship, and can be found in the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry and The Lancet Psychiatry.

Research

Broadly, Nicole’s research interests include early family dynamics and adversity as prospective risk factors for poor mental health and mental disorder in children and youth, modifiable health behaviours (e.g., physical activity), social determinants of health (e.g., early childhood experiences, sexual and gender identity), and the study of causal processes (e.g., mediational pathways).
